The 7 Sacred Teachings are also known as the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers and is a set of teachings on human behaviour.

This series is designed for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous leaders with a focus on collaboration towards the return to Indigenous values through the 7 Sacred Teachings.   Each module will explore how to apply each of these teachings in the context of leadership roles.  This course is for anyone transitioning to a leadership role or for those currently in leadership to help bolster their skills with the additional benefit of Indigenous teachings.


Module 1: Overview

This session identifies the 7 Sacred Teachings and looks at leadership behaviours you are currently demonstrating.  It introduces the teachings while creating community with the other members of the course.

What you will learn:       

  • The meaning of the 7 Sacred Teachings
  • How these teachings apply to leadership attributes
  • Create connection with other leaders

Module 2: Humility - A key characteristic of Leadership

The overall purpose of this session is to introduce and reinforce the concept of leadership. We will explore different leadership models that will help you understand the behaviours of effective leaders.

You will have the opportunity to rate your strengths as a leader, and identify opportunities to increase your effectiveness using the teaching of Humility.  Using the referent power of humility, a leader is able to influence the thoughts, attitudes and behaviours of others to want to achieve high goals.  

What you will learn:·       

  • The difference between Management and Leadership
  • How to assess your leadership style
  • Learn to adjust your default style based on team development      
  • To build on transformational leadership while recognizing transactional leadership styles

Module 3: Wisdom in Communication & Accountability

Wisdom is the gained experience and knowledge is to know the difference and accept responsibility and accountability. This session dives into the critical act of accepting personal accountability. 

We will look at what holds us and others back from acting with accountability and how to act when employees violate accountability.

Effective communication can be in short supply in the workplace.  We look at common barriers to communication as well as the importance of recognizing communication styles in others.  In addition, we will explore how developing effective communication bolsters our abilities to act with integrity and help build stronger teams. 

What you will learn:

  • Define effective communication and overcome barriers to communication  
  • Asking better questions to get better answers
  • How to be an accountable leader and inspire personal accountability in your organization
  • How to overcome violated accountability from your team

Module 4: Respect in Navigating Conflict

Respect is first and foremost. Respect one’s-self and respect will be given. Respect is given to all humankind. When dealing with difficult situations, respect will guide us and help us approach conflict with curiosity. Learning your conflict approach style, through self-assessment, will help you know how you respond to conflict. 

This session empowers you with understanding a variety of conflict responses, based on the TKI Conflict Management styles, so that you will be able to choose the best way based on the situation.  This type of flexibility is key in leadership especially as you deliver respectful communication with your team, peers and management.

What you will learn:

  • How do build and maintain respect while dealing with difficult situations
  • To recognize conflict management styles and how to be fluid in choosing the style that best suits the situation
  • Common causes of conflict and how to recognize the different types

Module 5: Courage through Emotional Intelligence

We seek strength and courage to face our greatest enemy-oneself through Emotional Awareness. Courage is required to be a strong leader. You will be called upon to use courage in making decisions, to be accountable and respectful in communication.

Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence has taught “The emotional brain responds to an event more quickly than the thinking brain” Understanding this truth, and many more relating to EI, will improve the way we lead. 

This session looks at the 5 characteristics of Emotional Intelligence:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Regulation
  • Motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social Skills

Explore your strengths and weaknesses related to Emotional Intelligence and capture what it means to lead with courage and how to increase your social radar.

What you will learn:

  • Assess your Emotional Intelligence strengths and weaknesses
  • Find ways to boost your EI
  • Explore the power of empathy
  • Build stronger relationships personally and professionally with the 5 characteristics of EI.

Module 6: Honesty - Foundational Quality to Building Trust as a Leader and within Teams

Honesty comes from within and not to confused with truth (law). In reality there can only be honesty if one is to survive. We know that without Trust we cannot have successful teams.  Explore the myths and realities of trust. 

Noted author Francis Fukuyama has said: “Widespread distrust in a society, in other words, imposes a kind of tax on all forms of economic activity, a tax that high-trust societies do not have to pay.” This session teaches that honesty is one of the 13 behaviours of high trust leaders.  Learn what it takes to be a trustworthy leader and how to inspire trust in your team.  You will gain insights on how to build trust and discover the 5 waves of trust according to the teachings of Stephen MR Covey.

What you will learn: 

  • The truth about trust – myths and realities
  • How trust tax works
  • The emotional bank account and how we can make deposits and withdrawals
  • Explore the 5 waves of trust: starting with self-trust

Module 7: Truth never changes. Truth teaches the ability to Adapt to Change.

Truth is symbolic of law and principle. The turtle represents truth and has been able to adapt to change without changing; thus he represents truth. Adapting to Change is important as a leader. 

Rosalinde Torres, who has studied leadership for many years, reminds us of the importance of adapting to change by abandoning a practice that has worked for us in the past.  She also states that this takes courage.  While truth does not change our capacity to change must increase as we develop our leadership skills. 

This module looks at the change curve and our responsibilities as leader to minimize the “dip” in productivity as our organizations move through change.  You will perform a self-assessment on change readiness as we look at what it takes to be a forward thinking, forward moving leader.  This session also looks at internal and external pressures organizations face that produce change. 

Knowing your strengths and weaknesses related to change will help identify gaps and allow you recognize how you can develop your “change capacity.”

What you will learn:

  • The stages of change    
  • How to coach team members through change
  • To explore internal and external pressures
  • Types of changes organizations face

Module 8: Love - The drive for stronger Employee Enablement/Engagement and the invitation to be a better leader. With fire and love we can create an environment of trust where teams are empowered and enabled to succeed. While we seek engagement from our teams our responsibility is to enable them. 

This session pulls together the teachings from all the other modules and uncovers how to overcome barriers to employee engagement.  Building an environment of trust and effective communication while providing tools and training will help propel your team forward.
